Not Washed or Cooked, # 191

The last of the ‘Christams’ run today (but seasonal mangles will continue through the week), and, as promised, the last culprits are the most heinous… These are a few of the many examples out there.

Link: South Pasadena United Methodist Church, ‘Christams [sic] Eve Candlelight Service’

The icing on the cake is the juxtaposition of the mangle and the church’s motto.

Here’s another mangled service announcement:

Finally, from a giftshop:

Christams [sic] balls all round, really!

Not Washed or Cooked, # 145

Another unconvincing scam from my mailbox, this one a fail from its subject line:

Today is the Feast of Corpus Christi in the Christian calendar, and we have a bonus: some mangled Latin. This unfortunate error is found in a misrepresentation of the title of a section of a hymn, ‘Sacris solemniis’, written for the occasion by St Thomas Aquinas:

Link: YouTube, ‘C Franck Penis angelicus Ave Maria Archikatedra we Fromborku’

The penis here is clearly misplaced: Aquinas is not concerned with angels’ genitals, but with their bread (panis).

Spellchecking Is Never Enough, # 122

A couple of seasonal typographical mangles:

‘Ester’, of course, is listed in spellcheckers, necessitating a further check by eye. Example 2 appears above a graphic; you’d have thought that, with so few words, someone might have noticed the mangle:

Not Washed or Cooked, # 117

Today brings a timely reminder about the importance of spellchecking and proofreading as well as enjoying a traditional batter-based fry-up. The first example is particularly reprehensible:

Link: The John Fisher School, ‘Shove Tuesday’

To be fair, there’s no evidence that this heading was personally inserted by the head teacher, but it is blatantly clear that no-one checked the text, and (over a year later) the error remains for the world to see.

I've been slightly naughty with the second example, since it is not, as it appears to be, a complete sentence, but its accidental aptness was irresistible:

Not Washed or Cooked, # 98

Jeremy Paxman was scathing on a recent Celebrity University Challenge when no-one knew the name of the feast that commemorates the three wise men visiting Jesus. I wonder what he would make of this little lot, none of which has seen a spellchecker, and all from sources that should know better:

Not Washed or Cooked, # 95

Today brings the last of the carols for this year, if not quite the last of the seasonal mangles…

First comes a typographical error from a source that managed to input it correctly the first time:

Link: ChapelMusic.com, Dona Klein, ‘Angels We Have Heard On High/Angles From the Realms of Glory’

The same error — again typed correctly elsewhere, and here compounded by an overuse of commas and a heinous combination of four nouns and a singular verb form — occurs in this passage of purple prose extracted from a longer piece:

Link: Church News: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, ‘“Realms of Glory” […]’

The third attempt at this title makes a different error, and clearly wasn’t introduced to a spellchecker:

Not Washed or Cooked, # 101

There are certain words that certain professions need to be able to spell. This one pertains to the Christian church:

Link: Blog of Saint Mary Parish, Evanston IL, ‘O Come, O Come, Emmaneul’

Turns out that the writer is Director of Evangelization & Catechesis for the parish. You’d have thought being able spell (or at least spellcheck) Emmanuel would be part of the job description.

You Cannot Be Serious, # 1

The post-festive period can be quite gloomy for many, so I'm going for maximum amusement today.

This is one of a small, but cherished, collection that I look at from time to time and think cannot possibly be genuine errors, so it starts a new thread called, with apologies to John McEnroe, You Cannot Be Serious.
