Not Washed or Cooked, # 100

The rest of the week comes courtesy of Dr Faustus. This instruction seems to have been typed in a rush:

A good spellchecker will flag such duplications, but those built into software for creating and editing material for the internet may not do this. (Blogger’s doesn’t.) This is one reason why it is usually better to use a word processor for composing text intended for a webpage; the text can then be copied to the webpage when it has been fully checked.

  1. Apart from the fact that "a friend" is singular, "they" is plural, that a spell checker will not catch... :-(

  2. I entirely agree with you, Bill. When I'm feeling stronger, I shall address the mire of 'PC' pronouns, which is an area that several Facebook discussions have shown raises no little hostility… Meanwhile, any contributions demonstrating how their use can completely obscure meaning, or render it problematically or ridiculously ambiguous, are welcome.
